Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammad CFR, born December 31st 1953, hails from Doguwa, Giade Local Government Area of Bauchi State. Justice Tanko embraced Western education at early stage of his life. He attended Giade primary school from 1961 to 1968. In 1969, he started his secondary school journey at Government Secondary school, Azare and finished in 1973.

He proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University Zaria where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Law in 1980. In 1984 and 1998, Justice Tanko obtained a Master’s and Doctorate (PhD) degrees respectively from the same ABU, Zaria. He was called to bar 1981, and then his career journey began.

HIS CAREER

Justice I.T Mohammad’s career started with his appointment as Magistrate Grade II at Bauchi State Judiciary from 1982 to 1984. He served as provost College of Legal and Islamic studies, Bauchi State from 1986 to 1989. He served as Chief Registrar at High Court of the Federal Capital Territory. In 1991, Justice I.T Mohammad CFR, became a judge at the Bauchi State Sharia Court of Appeal, where he served diligently.

Being a master of his game, Justice I.T Mohammad was in 1993 appointed to the Bench of the Nigerian Courts.  He served in this position for 13 years before his appointment to the Bench of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 2006.

His appointment as the Acting CJN has generated a lot of concerns on the minds of Nigerians. This followed the recent suspension of the ex-CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen by President Mohammad Buhari. Nigerians have reacted to the appointment of Justice Tanko and his swearing-in as Acting CJN, if it is constitutional or not.

Many argued that he is a Sharia judge and has no constitutional right to serve in the number one position of the judiciary. Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) and other professional bodies have issued warning to the president, to reverse his suspension of the ex-CJN as it is unconstitutional and serve as threat to our democracy.
