The new Inspector General of Police (IGP) in our country Nigeria is by name Abubakar Adamu Mohammed. Born on November 9, 1961, he is from Lafia in Nasarawa state. He was enlisted in the Nigerian Police force on 1st February, 1986 at the age of 24 as a cadet assistant superintendent. Once served as an assistant Inspector General at zone 5 police headquarters in Benin Edo state. Previously he served as the commissioner of police in Ekiti and Enugu state.

Worked at international police organization as an economic and financial crime specialist for 5 years. The assistant director in charge of the African sub-directorate of INTERPOL general secretariat for 3 years. Director of a national central bureau and a global communication system. And development for 2 years, the executive member for 2 years. And the vice president responsible for Africa during the organization‘s meeting in hanoi, Vietnam for 2 years. Abubakar Adamu Mohammed.

CAREER

Holds a bachelor of science in geography from Ahmadu Bello university Zaria. And a master’s of science (MSc) in international criminal justice systems from the university of Portland, England. He attended so many strategic professional leadership and operational courses both locally. And internationally, including the advanced detective course at the police staff college, Jos. Financial crimes course at the international training institute of the United states securities and exchange commission, in Washington DC.

A criminal analysis course at the in France. A senior management and development and planning course, and the staff management at the INTERPOL headquarters in Lyon, France. He attended the ECOWAS strategic level training on security sector reform in West Africa. As well the leadership and strategic management workshop for senior corporate. And public sector executives at the center of management development, Lagos. Abubakar Adamu became the new Inspector General of Police on 14th January 2019; he replaced Ibrahim Idris who was retiring at the age of 60 on the seat by the consent of the president.

Since Adamu was appointed the new inspector general some news has been going around by Nigerians in social media. The president was praised for replacing Idris while some believed the appointment was to help achieve favour from the northern part of Nigeria, as replacement the president suppose to pick among Igbo serving senior police officers to stay in force ,and also a thing of change to have one of them on seat. Citizens have asked for right leadership from the new inspector general, to help change the patterns of force in Nigeria.

NEW POSITION

Taking the first steps Adamu ordered the decentralization of the special anti- robbery squad, the arrangement was that commissioners of police in the 36 states will take full command and control of ( SARS ) in their commands now been under deputy inspector general of police In charge of force, criminal intelligence and investigation department (FCIID).

The governor forum secretariat believes that Mohammed Adamu‘s appointment is well deserved depending on his accomplishments, As he will bring professionalism and true leadership to policing in Nigeria, They also attested to his solid pedigree and rich experience, that he is the most qualified serving police officer currently to be able to occupy the office of the IG. He had risen to the apex of international policing in Lyon, France, and the position of which he held with distinctions.

The Nigerian governor’s forum urged that the new IG will use his experiences from previous offices at home and abroad to curb crime, and ensure peace to the entire country and propound the policing principles that will lead Nigerians in a better way to live and act positively together.
